QUEEN by Heather Gray

Back Cover Blurb:

You can't hide from the past.
Queen's world was shattered, and she was banished to a foreign land. Years pass before she dares to return, but what she finds is of little comfort. Greed and dishonesty have festered and grown in her absence. Embittered and cynical, Queen trusts few people.

Owen pursues a clandestine investigation and finds himself working side-by-side with a veritable ghost, an agent few have seen, a master of disguise known simply as Queen.  He craves her trust…but then uncovers a secret from his family's past that could destroy her.

Queen once sought refuge in America and now seeks it in disguise. Owen has always found his refuge in God, but will his faith be strong enough for the challenges ahead? Can he convince Queen to stop hiding, or is he doomed to become her most hated enemy?

Excerpt:

"I don't want him knowing what either of you look like. You need to leave until I get him back to the inn."

"It's not safe."

"The situation is a disaster, but he's safe. I trust him."

Owen listened to the voices. The first was Isadore/Iola. Thankfully, she'd dropped the horrible screech she'd been using as part of the barmaid act. The other belonged to a man. Older, he guessed, but he couldn't say by how much.

"I don't like it. This isn't part of the plan."

A woman's voice, also older. Isadore/Iola's parents?

The voices talked some more in a hushed whisper, then a door opened and closed.

"You can stop pretending to be unconscious, Mr. Loring."

"How do you know my name?" Owen sat up, his movement slow. He winced at the pain while taking in his surroundings. He was on a pallet in the main room of a small cottage. His hand explored the source of his discomfort and found a tender lump on the back of his head.

"I make it my business to learn things about people." She stood near the front door, not very far away in the smallness of the room. Her frizzy red hair looked as if it might take flight were it not held down by the small linen cap that was part of her uniform at the inn.

"I'm at a disadvantage, then, because I'm fairly certain I don't know your name. Isadore. Or should I say Iola?"

A kind of tired silence was her only response, and Owen decided to go for the jugular.

"Maybe it's Queen?"

Her hissed intake of breath told him he'd hit the mark.

"I stopped to visit Peter on my way here. He mentioned you two went fishing."

She smiled then, and the lines of tension eased from around her eyes. "Peter never mentions anything on accident."

Owen stared, puzzling out her words. "You didn't go fishing, did you?"

A quick shake of the head. "But you and I appear to be fishing in the same pond."

Peter had always been a sly fox. He'd told Owen, but the younger agent hadn't listened.

"Nobody's seen you in these parts for a long time."

She tipped her head in agreement. "Four years."

"Where have you been?"

"Does it matter?" She frowned at him.

"You told someone in this room that you trust me. So trust me now. Tell me what's going on."

"Where do I start?"

"Your name would be a good place."

Her mouth again stretched wide, her eyes crinkling at the corners, and light danced in the blue orbs. "Let's stick with Queen for now."

Raif and Me: Part 3

No, you haven't fallen into some alternate universe and missed parts one and two. I'm a part of a really cool story project with the amazing Leah Sanders and the awesome Wendy Knight. Leah wrote the first part of the story (CLICK HERE TO READ IT) and Wendy wrote the second (CLICK HERE TO... YOU GET THE IDEA).

And here it is. Part 3. Leah will have part 4 for you next week :) <3 ~Kelly

~*~*~*~

In the monster hunting business, Halloween is either take it or leave it. It's cool because at least, for one day, people-- no matter how sarcastic-- acknowledge what Tabitha dealt with every day: monsters exist.

Tabitha took her eyes off of Raif and watched the lyther demon in the form of a 5 year old girl walk by with a bag full of candy. She-- and the Cooperation-- called it a lyther demon. Normal people called it a werewolf. The Cooperation-- always making simple things difficult. Their motto since 1667.

A Sleagh Maith fluttered by. (A young girl in a fairy costume).
A princeps with a crown and wand ran along behind her (A princess, of course)
A vampire stalked across the street, mumbling about the horrible selection of candy at Mrs. Parrish's house. (A vampire was called a vampire. No matter what.)

And then there was Raif. Suddenly realizing she hadn't seen him in a few seconds, Tabitha scanned the shadows, cursing herself for letting her mind wander. Raif was a different sort of bird all together. He looked human, acted human-- was human-- for the most party anyway.

"Where are you?" she mumbled, squinting to see into the shadows. She couldn't lose him. He was too important to the project. Not that she cared about the project. She had no idea what it was. But it was important to the Cooperation and that made it important to her. They wouldn't be happy if she lost him. Not the Cooperation and certainly not Frankcorp, who wanted him back, but on their terms-- preferably unconscious and dismembered.

"Find what you are looking for?" Tabitha felt his breath on her neck, but didn't jump and she certainly didn't scream. One, she was a freakin' spy and spies didn't do that. And two, her pride wouldn't let her. In no way would he ever know he scared her.

Not again.

She slowly turned to face him, tilting her head up to see his face-- the same face she dreamt about every night. She remembered that face: leaning down to kiss her,  lips brushing against her forehead, saying he loved her. She remembered him holding her-- back before his name was Raif, back before he towered over her.

"Did you?"

"You already know the answer." His voice wasn't the one she remembered. It was gruff and dark. She felt the hunter power within her rise, ready to attack, ready to do her job. The only question was-- could she look into those eyes and kill him again?

100 Word Wednesday: Atonement

So... today's 100 Word Wednesday is a bit-- autobiographical. ;)

This week's prompt:
It was time. She'd fought against it for so long.

It was time. She'd fought against it for so long. The thought had haunted her for days. Should she? Should she not? Would she cry?

Finally, she became brave.

She wouldn't cry too much.

She wouldn't.

It would all be okay because-- she was strong.

She was brave.

She could do this no matter what others said. Their thoughts on it didn't matter.

She clicked play and the score swelled around her.

No tears. There would be no tears.

Except there were.

Lots of tears.

She turned off the movie and wiped her eyes. Why did it not win an Oscar for Best Picture?

~*~*~
I know I'm late to the party (it came out in 2007), but have you seen it!!!??? I didn't think I'd like it because I figured it was some stuffy, 'Too good you won't understand it' movie. ACK! It was so good.
And the library scene... swoon.
And the end... "I won't say another word. I promise."
TEARS people. Tears!
**DISCLAIMER: This movie is rated R for a reason ;) Not for my younger readers. I have to say, I'm 33 and even some part of it made me blush ;) (that note... Really? That's what you are going to say in a note lol. Oh Robbie.)
